Luke Greenbank is a backstroke specialist who has won individual and relay medals at Olympic, World Championship and European level - and he is now preparing for his second Olympic Games in Paris.
Ahead of qualifying for his second Games at the 2024 Aquatics GB Swimming Championships, Luke was part of the team at February's World Championships in Doha, getting valuable racing under the belt at that stage of the season across the 100m and 200m Backstroke events.
Greenbank's summer of 2022 saw the Englishman collect medals in all of the three competitions he competed in. Beginning at the World Aquatics Championships in Budapest, he took a silver and a bronze medal in the 200m Backstroke and the 4x100m Medley Relay respectively. This was then followed by a stellar performance with Team England at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, where he was part of the showpiece 4x100m Medley Team which took gold. The European Aquatics Championships in Rome brought his summer to an end, as he achieved a sole bronze medal in the 200m Backstroke.
Luke’s 2022 British Swimming Championships went very much to plan, with two gold medals from two events. Both the 100m and 200m Backstroke were textbook performances from the Loughborough Performance Centre swimmer, with the World Championships the next focus for him.
The Tokyo Olympics were memorable for Greenbank, with medal success at both relay and individual level. His silver medal came with the Men’s 4x100m Medley Relay team, where he led off on the backstroke leg for a team that ultimately secured second place, just shy of the top spot. The first of his two individual events was the 100m Backstroke, where a respectable swim put him one place outside of the semi-finals. His big individual triumph came in the 200m Backstroke, taking home a bronze medal with a strong four-lap effort.
The Cockermouth athlete showed brilliant ambition on the way to a thrilling Men's 200m Backstroke silver in Budapest, breaking his own British record at the meet, while he put down a strong opening leg as Britain went on to claim Men's 4x100m Medley Relay gold.
He had previously become a double medallist at his second World Championships in 2019 - including securing gold as part of Britain's victorious Men's 4x100m Medley Relay team.
Greenbank claimed bronze in the 200m Backstroke in Gwangju, narrowly missing out on the British record, before swimming the backstroke leg as Britain's men sensationally won the relay title. He also reached the semi-finals in the 100m Backstroke.
The year before, the Performance Centre Loughborough competitor enjoyed a positive 2018 season that saw him medal at the Commonwealth Games, again in the Medley Relay.
At his debut Commonwealths representing England, he collected silver as part of the Men's 4x100m Medley relay on the final night of racing on the Gold Coast. In his individual events, he was edged out of podium finishes, ranking fourth in both the 100m and 200m Backstroke.
Greenbank also competed at his second European Championships that year, featuring in all of the Backstroke events of 50m, 100m and 200m.
His 2017 season culminated with a debut outing at the World Championships in Budapest after the Crewe-born athlete defended his 200m Backstroke title at the British Championships earlier in the year in Sheffield. Greenbank's second trip to the podium at the British Championships 2017 came in the Men's 100m Backstroke after he touched second to take the silver.
Greenbank's first senior international outing came at the European Championships in London in 2016, gaining valuable competition experience in front of a home crowd. He then made the move to British Swimming's National Centre Loughborough, joining up with coach Mel Marshall after a number of years working with her at the City of Derby.
That year had begun with his debut British title in the Men's 200m Backstroke, a crown that earned him that spot on the Europeans squad.
The 2015 campaign was a highly successful one for Greenbank on the international stage as he returned home from the inaugural European Games in Baku, Azerbaijan with three medals, including golds in both the Men's 100m and 200m Backstroke, plus a silver in the Men's 4x100m Medley Relay.
