Ranjuo Tomblin and Holly Hughes combined to secure Britain's second gold medal in as many days at the World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup opener in Paris, as they triumphed in the Mixed Tech Duet contest.
Competing in their first senior international event together, teenage duo Tomblin, 19, and 17-year-old Hughes finished as clear winners ahead of the two Spanish pairings in silver and bronze. The Aquatics GB duet scored 182.9325 points for their routine, with a difficulty rating of 24.6500, 83.0750 for artistic impression and an execution tally of 99.8575.
This was GB's first-ever mixed duet title at a World Cup, following on from Tomblin's moment of history on Friday, when he soared to Men's Tech Solo gold - another first at World Cup level.
"Oh my goodness, I can’t believe this is happening. We’re obviously really happy with the result, but there are things we know we need to improve on and we’re going take this experience and work on our routines and maybe increasing our DD (degree of difficulty) to really get that artistic impression in for the bigger competitions later in the year," said Ranjuo.
Holly added: "It’s pretty cool as this is my first international competition competing with Ranjuo and yesterday he got the gold medal, so I thought ‘high expectations’ but we seem to have met them. He’s very encouraging and really helps me get through the competition."
Later on the Saturday programme, the British team finished 10th in the Tech Team final, with a young group gaining priceless international experience against top-class rivals.
