Tom Daley has been crowned the 2017 World Champion in the Men’s 10m Platform event after taking gold on the final day of the diving competition in Budapest.
Daley topped the World podium just hours after he claimed silver in the Mixed 3m Synchro with Grace Reid.
After progressing from yesterday’s semi-final in fine form, Daley laid down a marker early on in the World Championship final to state his medal winning intentions with his opening dive, a Reverse 3 1/2 Somersaults tucked, scoring almost 100 points (98.60).
He dominated throughout the blue-ribbon event on the diving competition schedule, placing top at the end of each round.
Hot on his heels the whole way though was the 2016 Olympic Champion Chen Aisen who pushed Daley all the way to the last dive.
Daley’s highest scoring dive came in the sixth and final round, a Back 3 1/2 somersaults tucked, scored 106.20 which sealed the victory for him with a total of 590.95.
“It was a very close competition all the way to the end and considering everything that happened last year in Rio, not making the final,” Daley said. “So to come back here now and win both gold and silver all in one day is just amazing.
“The atmosphere here today felt like a little bit of a home crowd and that atmosphere really helped me I think.
“To beat the Olympic Champion does feel nice, knowing that my score today would’ve won gold in Rio makes me feel good and helps me put Rio to bed and know that I can win and that’s going to help me on my journey to Tokyo.
“To be able to go out there and deliver when it matters is something that I’ve really been working and not getting ahead of myself and remain consistently steady in the top positions.
“I would never have thought that I would win three world titles but today helps me continue to keep working hard and keep focused knowing that I can still perform at my best.”
He was joined on the podium by two Chinese divers, silver went to Chen Aisen with 585.25 points and the bronze medal was claimed by Yang Jian with 565.15 points.
