Junior Diving team selected for Rio world champs

26 Sep 2024

A nine-strong British team of junior divers will head to the Brazilian seaside city of Rio de Janeiro for the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships from 24 November – 1 December 2024.

The 25th edition of the World Aquatics Junior Diving Championships is set to take place at the Júlio Delamare Aquatic Park, located in the Maracanã Sports Complex – marking the first international World Aquatics event to take place in Brazil since the country hosted diving competition for the Rio 2016 Summer Olympics.

Among the British cohort selected to travel in November is three medallists from the 2022 edition of the competition, with Jordan Fisher-Eames and Maisie Bond having secured respective Boys B and Girls B platform silver medals two years ago in Canada, in addition to Oscar Kane who contributed to Great Britain’s Mixed Team event bronze.

Bond and Fisher-Eames were also more recently part of a British team’s positive nine-medal haul at July’s European Junior Diving Championships. Those championships saw individual gold medals for Robbie Wood (Boys B Platform) and Skye Fisher-Eames (Girls B Platform), with Noah Penman earning silver (Boys A 1m Springboard) as Hannah Newbrook secured herself a bronze (Girls A Platform) - and the quartet now prepare for further exposure to competing against world’s best age group divers following there European success.

Juliette John – a European Junior silver medallist in 2023 alongside Newbrook in the Girls A/B Synchro Platform – and Todd Geggus – Boys A 1m and 3m Aquatics GB Elite Junior Diving Champion in 2024 – complete the nine-strong team flying out to Brazil.

Team Leader and Aquatics GB Performance Pathway Lead for Diving, Jen Leeming, commented:

“We've selected a small team of nine athletes for Rio, but within that group that we've got a number of previous junior European and even previous junior world medallists - there is a good mix of experience along with a few younger additions.

“For us the main priority with these upcoming championships is to provide the divers selected with a developmental experience that benefits their longer term careers, enabling them to be better prepared for the four or eight year journey ahead of them as we look towards LA 2028, Brisbane 2032 and beyond.

“Opportunities like these on the pathway also offer further development to the great bunch of coaches we have selected to travel with the team, and I think we’ll see lots of positive learnings for both athletes and coaches on this trip.”

Both age groups have opportunities to compete for individual world junior titles across the 1m springboard, 3m springboard and platform events - with the age groups combined for the synchronised diving and Mixed Team events. Further information can be found on the Official Event page HERE.
