7 Aug 2018

Olympic Champ Jack Laugher lands the British Diving teams second gold medal of the day in the Men's 1m finals and teammate James Heatly took bronze.

Laugher claimed carried through his prelims form to dominate all six rounds of the final in Edinburgh, his final score of 414.60 placed him at the centre of the European Championship podium.

Laugher's highest-scoring dive came in the fourth round, an Inward 2 1/2 Somersaults Piked, which clocked a total of 74.80 and cemented his podium finish.

"This gold medal was a really good way for me to kick off these championships, I have two more events to go so yeah. It wasn't my best performance today, not as good as my Commonwealth Games 1m outing but I'm really happy to come out on top again," said Laugher.

"I think my diving was consistent both in the morning prelims and in this afternoon's final and take that confidence into the rest of the week.

"This event was very much about getting in front of the crowd, experiencing the competition environment and hopefully I can go and smash the 3m and 3m Synchro with Chris [Mears].

"I think It's really obvious to see how strong we [British Diving] are at the moment, the strength and depth we have across events, for both men and women. It's not just one or two that are achieving but right across the board and age groups, there is lots of great talent coming through."

James Heatly - Men's 1m Finals Glasgow 2018

Teammate James Heatly claimed the bronze medal in the final moments of the event with his sixth round dive, also an Inward 2 1/2 Somersaults Piked (405B) and scored 69.70. Heatly's final score was 391.70

After he had collected his medal Heatly explained, "I feel amazing to have got bronze today, I was a bit shaky this morning in the prelims but then to come out and perform better was great and to do it in front of a home crowd as well is just incredible.

"The atmosphere today just reminded of the 2014 Commonwealth Games, it's my home pool and I love to dive here.

The British duo were separated on the podium by Italy's Giovanni Tocci who took the silver with a total of 401.10.
