Phoebe Banks and Emily Martin Kiev 2019

Synchro Silver for Banks and Martin

8 Aug 2019

At the midway point of the 2019 European Diving Championships, Phoebe Banks and Emily Martin land the second British medal of the week in Kiev, Ukraine.

With a team of 13 British divers in Kiev searching for success, Phoebe Banks and Emily Martin took their opportunity from the 10m platform on Wednesday afternoon, producing a consistent display throughout the synchronised event to be rewarded with a silver medal.

Finishing on a Back 2½ Somersaults 1½ Twists Pike (5253B) – a new dive to their set routine, the pair equalled their fourth round dive score of 67.20 but it wasn’t quite enough to bridge the gap to the Italian pair who took gold.

Following the competition Emily Martin said:

“We are quite happy with this medal. We kept our balance for the whole competition, our dives were on a constantly good level. We performed the last one for the first time in competition, it was a kind of gamble, but paid off at the end.”

Wednesday evening’s action also saw Jordan Houlden finish narrowly outside the medals by just 0.35 point to take fourth in the Men’s 1m Springboard. After missing 2017 and 2018 with injury, it was another positive result to add to his two medals from FINA Grand Prix events earlier this year in the 3m Synchro format, which Houlden will contest with Anthony Harding on Saturday.

Britain’s first medal of the championships had been sealed on day one as Katherine Torrance, Noah Williams, Eden Cheng and Anthony Harding took bronze in the Mixed Team event. The pick of the dives among the quartet came from Harding, with his Forward 4 ½ Somersault Tuck (109C) receiving 83.60 points, the highest scoring 3m springboard attempt across the competition.

Katherine Torrance, commented on the team’s bronze performance:

“This new format was very exciting, we enjoyed it very much! It was a good start for us, we are pleased with this medal, though we had a couple of smaller mistakes which we need to work on to do better in the upcoming events.”
