British Swimming unveils World Junior Team

27 Apr 2015

A group of British Swimming’s brightest prospects has been selected to compete at the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in August.

Twelve athletes will fight for world titles after putting themselves onto the team following their performances at the British Swimming Championships in London earlier this month.

British Swimming Head of Performance Pathways Tim Jones will lead the team to Singapore.

“We will be sending a team that is small and focused,” explained Jones. “We had a good contingent of athletes that achieved a minimum consideration standard at the trials and we’ve taken six males and six females from these.

“It’s a strong team that includes medal opportunities but our longer term aim and belief is that this group of athletes will support British Swimming’s overall Rio 2016 Olympic ambitions. The experience gained this summer will play a vital role in achieving this.”

The event will feature the world’s best girls aged 14-17 and boys aged 15-18, and will come off the back of a very busy summer.

“It will be a big challenge for nine of the team as they have to face two major meets this summer – the European Games in Baku followed by the World Junior Championships,” said Jones.

“I believe this group of young athletes will rise to the challenge. We’ll make sure they have a conducive preparation as we head to Thailand for a short holding camp before dropping into Singapore three days out from competition for our final preparations.”
