Britain’s swimmers continue to shine in the Far East after claiming a total of nine medals on day two of the Japan Open at the Tatsumi International Pool, Tokyo.
Off the back of an intensive training camp in Thailand, the athletes
swam through the pain to claim four gold medals and five bronze as they
continue to progress and bring down their times from heats to finals.
Taking the top spot on the podium were James Guy, Adam Peaty, Ben Proud and Imogen Clark.
Double Olympic silver medallist James Guy (National Centre Bath) backed up his performance on day one, a bronze in the 200m Butterfly, with gold in the 400m Freestyle.
“It’s been a bit of a surprise to swim this way off the back of the training we’ve been doing,” Guy said. “It’s a good sign for the rest of the season and gives me confidence.”
Olympic Champion Adam Peaty (National Centre Loughborough) won his second gold of the competition with a well-executed 50m Breaststroke.
“I’d have liked to go a little bit faster tonight but when you’re in such a hard block of training it’s difficult to get the speed up there but I’m more than happy with that,” Peaty said.
Commonwealth Champion Ben Proud (Plymouth Leander) secured gold in the 50m Butterfly. He held a good lead going into the touch to take the well-earned top spot on the podium.
“That was a good race that felt a lot better than this morning,” Proud said. “It is what I was expecting around about now in the season. I’d like to go faster as the meet goes on so I can go to Budapest with even more confidence.”
Imogen Clark (National Centre Loughborough) secured her first gold of the Japan Open after touching first in the 50m Breaststroke and was joined on the podium by Sarah Vasey (National Centre Loughborough).
“I thought my performance was ok,” Clark said. “It wasn’t far off my British Record which I swam at the national championships last month so I’m pretty happy with that.”
Olympic finalist Hannah Miley (University of Aberdeen) secured the Brits’ first medal of the session with bronze in the 400m Individual Medley while Alys Thomas (Swansea Aquatics) won bronze in the 50m Butterfly. Jessica Fullalove (National Centre Bath) took bronze in the 200m Backstroke and Olympic medallist Duncan Scott won bronze in the 100m Freestyle.
