British Swimming can confirm that one leg of the Swim Wales Open Water Challenge Series will incorporate this year's selection races for British marathon swimming teams, ahead of the senior and junior European Championships later in 2022.
Llandegfedd Lake, Coed y Paen in Pontypool, Monmouthshire will play host to the selection races on Sunday 19th June, as part of the two-day Challenge Series event at that venue.
The races will form a part of the British team selection process for those looking to be considered for the European Junior Open Water Championship (date and venue TBC) and European Open Water Championship (Ostia, Italy – August 2022) teams. The full selection policies for these two events can be accessed on the British Swimming website here, with the senior European Championship selections for the 10km events also based on performances at June’s World Championships in Budapest.
Those wishing to enter the selection races at Llandegfedd should complete the relevant online form, via Swim Wales, here.
Kevin Renshaw, British Swimming's Performance Pathway and Distance Lead for Olympic swimming, said: "Last year, the Swim Wales Open Water Meet at the Llandegfedd Lake did a superb job of incorporating the British junior team selection race and allowed us to select an exciting team for the 2021 junior international season.
"We are again looking forward to seeing this beautiful venue play host to the British team selection races, which will be part of the Swim Wales Challenge Series and will play a role in helping us pick both the senior and junior athletes to compete at the European Open Water Championships and European Junior Open Water Championships. This competition in Wales will also grant valuable race experience to our swimmers in a busy and competitive field."
