World record for mixed relay team in Berlin

It was a British one-two as Adam Peaty and Ross Murdoch both took to the water in the 100m Breaststroke.

Peaty was third on the turn but brought it home to win the title ahead of Murdoch while Giedrius Titenis of Lithuania took the bronze medal.

Chris Walker-Hebborn continued his successful summer by adding the European 100m Backstroke title to the Commonwealth title he won in Glasgow by touching ahead of Jeremy Stravius (France) and Jan-Philip Glania (Germany). He said: “I am so excited to win this. After the Commonwealth Games there was no pressure on me, so I just wanted to go out there, enjoy it and see see what happened and I'm really pleased with the result.”

In the 4x100m Mixed Medley relay the British quartet of Walker-Hebborn, Peaty, Jemma Lowe and Fran Halsall dominated the final race of the evening to finish in a World record time of 3:44.02.

The team, which was made up of three Commonwealth Champions, led on each of the crossovers and touched almost two seconds quicker than second-place Netherlands.

Halsall said: “It is fun swimming the mixed relay, the guys give a different dynamics to the event. Of course, we had the individual gold medallists in the 100m back and breast, so I had a great starting position.”

Lizzie Simmonds fought back from sixth place at the half way mark to win silver in the 200m Backstroke, with Spain’s Duane Da Rocha Marce touching 0.29 seconds ahead to secure the gold.

She said: “I’m very pleased with the result, even if it was a tight finish. Today I used different tactics because I held back during the first 100m, and that paid off in the final sprint.”

In the 50m Butterfly Ben Proud and Ukraine’s Andriy Govorov both touched in 23.21 to share bronze. Florent Manaudou (France) and Yauhen Tsurkin (Belarus) shared gold after also clocking the same time (23.00).

Halsall won bronze in the 50m Butterfly behind Jeanette Ottesen (Denmark) and Sarah Sjoestroem (Sweden).

Sophie Taylor was passed medically fit to swim this morning but unfortunately when she dived in for her heat in the 100m Breaststroke she felt a twinge in her back. It has been a difficult couple of weeks for her but it is expected that after a few days of recovery and work with the British Swimming medical team she might be ready to swim again later this week. 

Robert Pavoni progressed to tomorrow’s 200m Individual Medley final after qualifying fourth.
