Targeting the 200m Freestyle is top of the agenda for swimming World Champion James Guy as he prepares for this month’s World Championships in Hungary.
The 21-year-old won double gold at the Worlds two years ago in the 200m Freestyle and 4x200 Freestyle Relay, alongside a silver in the 400m Freestyle, and is in a “good place” after a thorough preparation.
Two inspired silver medals at the Rio 2016 Olympics, four British titles in 2017 and, having posted a series of impressive performances already this year, Guy is full of belief ahead of this year’s main event in Budapest (23 to 30 July).
“My aim is to do the best that I can and, with the great preparation I’ve had, I’m confident I can achieve that. I am the current World Champion in the 200m Freestyle and I will give my absolute everything in pursuit of my goals,” said Guy.
“There are no easy World Championships but this one is going to be especially tough with the likes of Sun Yang, Mack Horton, Chad le Clos and the US guys - it’s going to be interesting.
Guy’s route to the World Championships started out in Sheffield in April when he earned selection to the British Swimming team in emphatic fashion.
Based at the National Centre in Bath and under the guidance of coach Jol Finck, Guy has combined a heavy training workload with a tough international competition schedule but has maintained impressive form throughout.
He excelled at the Japan Open in Tokyo in May and followed it up with strong outings last month at the Mare Nostrum in Monaco and Seven Hills meet in Rome before concluding his prep at a camp in Italy.
“I’m really pleased with the way I’ve been going in terms of my racing this season,” said Guy. “I’m in a good place, I’ve been training really well and the performances have been where I want them to be. It’s all pointing towards doing a good job this summer.”
