Murdoch ready for Worlds 200m show

12 Jul 2017

Ross Murdoch may well have earned gold medals at World, European and Commonwealth level but he is by no means satisfied as he closes in on his third World Championships this month.

After a winter of hard work, Murdoch came out firing in 2017 and claimed his first 200m Breaststroke title at the British Championships in April to book his spot on the team for the World Championships in Budapest.

Aside from last year’s European Championships, where he won gold in the London event, it will be Murdoch’s first international outing in the 200m Breaststroke since winning the title at the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

“I have worked really hard this winter and I am excited to be back on the big stage in my favoured event,” said Murdoch, who won 100m Breaststroke bronze and 4x100m Medley Mixed Relay gold at the last Worlds in 2015.

“This will be my third World Championships and I’m looking forward to it. Being able to swim my main event on the biggest stage is exciting. I’ve earned the right to be on the team in the 200m and I’m focused on what I need to do to achieve my aim.”

The University of Stirling swimmer goes into the World Championships at the Danube Arena (23-30 July) in confident mood due to a demanding preparation which combined heavy workloads with quality racing.

“I’m definitely a lot happier with my swimming going into these World Championships,” explained Murdoch. “I’m enjoying training and take great confidence from knowing the amount of work that has gone it to defining this summer’s performance.”

Murdoch will gather with his team mates this week in Edinburgh for a camp designed to finalise preparations while reinforcing the team dynamic.

The British Swimming team of 27 will base themselves at the Royal Commonwealth Pool for four days before travelling on to Budapest.
