Olympic and World Champion Adam Peaty powered home to a 50m Breaststroke World record of 26.10 in the morning heats session on day three of the FINA World Championships in Budapest.
Peaty (National Centre Loughborough) went in the ninth and final heat of the morning in the Men’s 50m Breast after claiming the World 100m Breaststroke title last night in the Danube Arena.
After the race Peaty said, “Coming into the heats this morning I saw Cam and Kevin go quite fast and I knew that I had to put a mark down.
“I was quite relaxed this morning, I wasn’t going out there for a world record honestly. I was just going out there to qualify for the semi-finals. So if we can pick up a few hundredths or tenths of a second tonight then we’ll be happy.
Peaty broke his own world record of 26.42 that he set two years earlier at the 2015 World Championships in Kazan, Russia.
“It was just before 10am the time of my swim so still quite early for a world record but yeah I’m very happy with that swim,” added Peaty.
Also in finals action tonight for the British team is Duncan Scott (University of Stirling) and James Guy (National Centre Bath), they both go in the Men’s 200m Freestyle after progressing from last night’s semi-finals, qualifying first and second fastest respectively.
Sarah Vasey (National Centre Loughborough) will go in the Women’s 100m Breaststroke final and University of Stirling swimmer Kathleen Dawson will take to the pool in the final of the Women’s 100m Backstroke.
