Laugher returned to the boards at the Maria Lenk pool following his gold medal success earlier in the week and comfortably booked his spot in the next stage of the competition.
He finished with a score of 439.95 and ranked seventh after his 6 dives were completed.
After a shaky start due to the weather conditions, Laugher improved round after round to move up the rankings.
His best dive came in the third round, an Inward 3 ½ Somersaults Tucked which scored 88.40, Laugher then closed the prelims with a Back 3½ Somersaults Tucked which also scored highly, 86.40.
Team GB's Freddie Woodward who made his Olympic Games debut in Rio, also competed in the event and finished an agonising 19th.
Woodward just missed out on a place in the semi-final by less than two points with a score of 388.15.
Jamaican diver Yona Kinght-Wisdom who trains in Leeds under British coaches made it through to the semi-final at his debut Olympic Games.
