Scott Quin smashes his own world record to cap off another fine morning of swimming at the British Para-Swimming International Meet.
The breaststroke specialist from Edinburgh had always threatened to go quicker than his previous global best, and he powered through the first 50m of his specialist 100m Breaststroke, reaching halfway in 30.93.
Stretching away from the rest of the field down the closing length, it was Quin versus the clock, the Warrender swimmer touching in 1.05.28 to take a full second off his old best.
Afterwards the delighted S14 Paralympic silver medallist said:
“That swim there, that’s what I’ve kind of been expecting, not like in a big headed way, but just because I know how consistent I’ve been in training and at domestic competitions. I was able to execute some key things I’ve done in training over the last couple of weeks and that was, well, I’m just blown away really!
“Obviously this is our trials, so this is the first key part of a big season ahead of us, then the focus shifts to World’s, provided I qualify.”
Quin will return this evening with his eyes firmly set on taking World Para Swimming World Series gold here at the Glasgow leg, with Spain’s S5 Antoni Ponce Bertran likely to be his closest rival. Having not swam a 100m Breaststroke for 10 years, Reece Dunn took an astonishing nine seconds off his personal best with a 1.11.30 performance.
Fresh from his victory in the 200m Freestyle last night, City of Norwich swimmer Jordan Catchpole stated his intent ahead of tonight’s World Series title decider after he carved out a British record time of 1:00.94 in the Men’s S14 100 Backstroke.
Catchpole notched up a score of 919 points to place himself top of the rankings, joint on points with Azerbaijan’s Raman Salei, with S12 Stephen Clegg the third man through to the final with 885 points.
After a world record on the opening night, Maisie Summers-Newton was in great form once again at Tollcross, this time producing a fine breaststroke swim of 1.36.03, the S6 swimmer notching up 926 points. The Women’s 100m MC Breaststroke also saw Brock Whiston post a 1.24.41 time, whilst S12 Elena Krawzow of Germany swam 1.14.97. Those three were the top qualifiers.
In qualifying for tonight’s Women’s MC 100m Backstroke finals the big names were all to the fore, Xinyi Wang taking top spot with 962 points, the S11 just ahead of Italian S13 Carlotta Gilli and British S8 Alice Tai, that pair tied on 953 points. Bethany Firth, Abby Kane and Jessica-Jane Applegate also comfortably advanced.
Live results from Glasgow are available on British Swimming’s website here and you can catch all the action on the live stream, which resumes at 4.30pm this evening, via Facebook or the British Swimming YouTube channel.
