On the penultimate day of the Commonwealth Water Polo Championships, Scotland teams win to set up bronze medal matches against South Africa and Malta Men loose to England ahead of final.
With the women's final to be played between England and Malta, Scotland, Wales and South Africa played each other to see who would play for the bronze medal.
Scotland met Wales in the first match of the day. Like their group meeting this game was very close with both teams finding flaws in their opposition’s defence. But it was Scotland who held on for victory winning 6-5 (3-1, 2-2, 0-1, 1-1).
The second women’s game was between South Africa and Wales. South Africa took an early lead, taking advantage of Wales having played earlier in the day. Supported by the men, the Welsh women came into the game in the second half but it was too late to catch South Africa who took a 14-4 victory.
In the men’s competition Malta and England faced each other in the final round of the group stage matches.
A dress rehearsal of tomorrow’s final, many expected this game to be the closest of the week but it was nowhere near as England romped to a 10-3 (3-0,3-0, 2-1, 2-2) win.
After the loss to Scotland last night, New Zealand went into their final group match against Wales needing a win to put the pressure on the hosts. Despite improving over the week, Wales suffered their fifth straight defeat of the Championships as they lost 9-1 (2-0, 3-0, 1-1, 3-0) to the Kiwis.
The pressure was on Scotland to secure a win against bottom of the table Singapore in their final group stage match and ensure they were through to the bronze medal match.
After a fairly one-sided match, Singapore rallied in the last quarter but Scotland held on for a 12-6 win.
The results mean that England Women will play Canada in the first final match tomorrow, followed by England Men against Malta. Scotland’s Men and Women will both play South Africa during the two bronze medal matches.
Tickets for the final day are still available for both games on the door at the Aberdeen Sports Village Aquatics Centre or online.
